Westmoreland, Jamaica – Opposition Leader Mark Golding is pushing back against claims that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) rescued the country’s economy, saying the facts tell a very different story.
Speaking on Wednesday during a tour of Central Westmoreland, Golding told supporters that it was the People’s National Party (PNP) that laid the foundation for Jamaica’s economic progress.
“It’s simply not true to say the JLP rescued the economy,” Golding said.
The PNP president pointed to major strides made under the last PNP administration, including a drop in the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio from a staggering 147% to 115%. According to Golding, that achievement was the result of tough, disciplined leadership and strong economic planning.
Golding also highlighted the PetroCaribe agreement with Venezuela, which he said provided critical financial relief and helped stabilize the economy during difficult times.
“We took tough decisions and made real progress. That didn’t start with the JLP,” Golding insisted.
Golding and his team were on the ground in Westmoreland as part of a PNP tour of the parish, meeting residents and discussing key issues ahead of the upcoming elections.
