Four Killed in Small Plane Crash at London Southend Airport

SUSSEX, England — Tragedy struck at London Southend Airport on Sunday after a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all four people on board, local officials have confirmed.

According to Essex Police, the incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. local time when a 12-metre aircraft, which had landed earlier in the day, took off en route to the Netherlands. Shortly after departure, the plane encountered difficulties and crashed within the airport boundary.

Police say they are working to officially confirm the identities of the deceased, but all are believed to be foreign nationals.

“Our thoughts are with their families and colleagues at this tragic time. I can promise them that those who have passed away will be treated with the utmost care and dignity,” police said in a statement.

The operator of the flight, Zeusch Aviation, confirmed that its flight SUZ1 was involved in the crash and said the company is “actively supporting the authorities with the investigation.”

The East England Ambulance Service deployed a significant emergency response, including four ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, four Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles, three senior paramedic cars, and an air ambulance to the scene.

Due to the proximity of the crash site, the Rochford Hundred Golf Club and Westcliff Rugby Club were evacuated, and authorities urged the public to avoid the area.

In a statement, London Southend Airport described the event as a “serious incident” involving a general aviation aircraft.

“We are working closely with the local authorities and will be able to provide more information as soon as possible,” the airport said.

All flights to and from the airport have been cancelled, and the facility remains closed while investigations continue. Passengers scheduled to travel through the airport have been advised to contact their airlines for updates.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has deployed a team to investigate the cause of the accident.

London Southend Airport is located about an hour east of London, near the southern English coastline.
