CALIFORNIA, USA — A farmworker has died after falling off a roof during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in Camarillo, California, amid heightened tensions over mass deportation campaigns across the United States.
The deceased has been identified as Jaime Garcia, who succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after falling approximately 30 feet during the raid, according to ABC Los Angeles affiliate KABC.

On Thursday, federal agents clashed with protesters while conducting a raid at Glass House Farms in Ventura County — one of at least two large-scale operations in Southern California that day. Witnesses say Garcia climbed onto the roof of a greenhouse and fell while possibly attempting to flee the scene.
An update on the family’s GoFundMe page read, “With heavy hearts my uncle has passed away. Jaime was not just a farmworker, he was a provider, and a human being who deserved dignity. His death is not an isolated tragedy. It is the result of a targeted raid at Glass House Farms. Workers were met not with protection, but with chaos and fear. Some were detained. Others were traumatized. Jaime lost his life.”

Initially, the United Farm Workers union announced Garcia’s death on Friday, but later, Ventura County Medical Center stated he was alive but in critical condition. Sadly, his passing was confirmed by family members on Saturday.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied that Garcia was being pursued by law enforcement at the time of the fall. “This man was not in and has not been in CBP or ICE custody. Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a greenhouse and fell 30 feet,” said DHS Public Affairs Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “CBP immediately called a medivac to the scene to get him care as quickly as possible.”
Garcia’s family described him as their sole provider and said his death has left them devastated.
