ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reporting further success in its crackdown on the use of courier services to traffic drugs, with the arrest and charge of a St Catherine mechanic.
The accused has been identified as 51-year-old Jayson Josephs, a mechanic of Wakefield district, Linstead, St Catherine.
According to reports, on January 29 this year, Josephs attempted to send a package labelled “All Purpose Seasoning” to London from a post office in St Catherine.
However, during routine security screening, anomalies were detected in the package, prompting the intervention of the police’s Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID).
A search of the parcel reportedly revealed eight ounces of ganja hidden inside.
Following a targeted operation on Thursday, July 10, Josephs was apprehended. He has since been charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, attempting to export ganja, and conspiracy to export ganja.
Police say that the FNID has been investigating more than 100 similar cases since the start of the year in which drugs were discovered in packages sent through courier services.
Acting Senior Superintendent of Police Patrae Rowe, Director of the FNID, underscored the division’s determination to disrupt the flow of illicit drugs, particularly through couriers.
“We are aware of the modus operandi of individuals who are moving and trading drugs within our borders, and we are intensifying our efforts to ensure they are apprehended and face the full force of the law,” he said.
The JCF is encouraging the public to assist by reporting anyone involved in the drug trade or any suspicious activities.
