PORT-DE-PAIX, Haiti — Two Jamaicans have been confirmed dead after Haitian authorities intercepted a rowboat “heavily laden with drugs” off the northwest coast of Haiti, officials said. Another person also died, and a Bahamian national was arrested during the operation.
According to a statement from the counter-narcotics unit of the Haitian National Police (HNP), the bust was carried out under the leadership of Acting Superintendent Jeir Pierre, in collaboration with the Port-de-Paix police and the prosecutor’s office.
“Under the leadership of Acting Superintendent Jeir Pierre, the Port-de-Paix police and prosecutor’s office intercepted a row boat heavily laden with drugs… The result: two Jamaicans drowned, one body in the morgue and a Bahamian in custody,” the HNP said.Authorities seized more than 90 kilograms of cocaine during the operation and indicated that several other suspicious boats are still believed to be at large.Haitian officials described the operation as “a first in the history of the northwest”.
Meanwhile, the Bahamian government said it is still awaiting official confirmation but noted that unconfirmed reports suggest the men may have been “shot at from unknown persons while on a speed boat, which resulted in two of the males being killed and another hospitalised.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to search for additional suspects and vessels.
