Former Police Commissioner Antony Anderson Named Jamaica’s Ambassador-Designate to the US

KINGSTON – In a significant move to bolster Jamaica’s international security partnerships, former Commissioner of Police Major General (Retired) Antony Anderson has been appointed as Jamaica’s Ambassador-designate to the United States and Permanent Representative-designate to the Organisation of American States (OAS). The announcement, made today by Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness, comes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen bilateral and regional collaboration on security and diplomatic fronts.

Anderson, who replaces Ambassador Audrey Marks—recently resigned and subsequently appointed to the Senate—brings decades of extensive experience in defence, security, and strategic leadership. “We are very pleased that Major General Anderson will assume this role at a time when Jamaica looks to strengthen its security partnerships,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, during a press briefing on Thursday. “His leadership and expertise will be critical in advancing Jamaica’s wider priorities, fostering deeper collaboration with the United States while engaging strategically within the OAS.”

Throughout his distinguished career, Anderson has played pivotal roles in shaping national security. He served as the Chief of Defence Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and later became Jamaica’s first National Security Advisor, where he was instrumental in developing robust national security policies and enhancing international cooperation. As Commissioner of Police, he spearheaded modernization initiatives within the Jamaica Constabulary Force, integrating advanced technology and driving organisational reforms to improve public safety and law enforcement standards.

The Ministry noted that Anderson’s appointment reflects Jamaica’s commitment to placing experienced leadership in key ambassadorial roles, particularly in matters of regional security. His track record in facilitating joint security initiatives across the Caribbean and advising governments on national security frameworks positions him as an ideal candidate to further Jamaica’s diplomatic agenda.

Anderson holds a Master of Defence Administration from the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. He is expected to assume his new post in Washington, D.C., imminently, where he will build on the strong foundation established by his predecessor.

As Jamaica looks to navigate a complex global security landscape, Anderson’s appointment is widely seen as a strategic step towards enhancing the country’s international partnerships and ensuring a proactive approach to emerging challenges.
