KINGSTON, Jamaica — Detectives have launched an inquiry after 26-year-old Tyra Spaulding, an accountant and former contestant in the 2023 Miss Universe Jamaica pageant, was found dead at her home last night. Family members made the discovery, and police say they are treating the matter as a suspected suicide while investigations continue.
Friends and colleagues had raised concern in
recent weeks after Spaulding shared troubling posts on social media. On August 15, she wrote on Instagram that she was “going through hell.” In a video uploaded to her YouTube channel two weeks ago titled “Don’t be sad,” Spaulding said, “I’m fighting for my life… my mind is trying to kill me.” She added that every day brought new suicidal thoughts, describing an internal battle between wanting to live and wanting to die.
Spaulding was known not only for her beauty and career as an accountant but also for her role as a mental health and suicide-prevention advocate. Her passing has sent shockwaves through family, friends, and the wider community, sparking calls for greater awareness and support for those struggling with mental illness.
