Former Las Vegas Official Robert Telles Convicted of Journalist Jeff German’s Murder

Robert Telles, a former Las Vegas public administrator, has been convicted of murdering investigative journalist Jeff German, a reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal. German was killed in August 2022 after publishing a series of articles that exposed misconduct within Telles’s office, including allegations of a toxic work environment and an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate.

The investigation into German’s death revealed crucial evidence, including DNA and surveillance footage, linking Telles to the crime. On the day of the murder, security cameras captured a man matching Telles’s description near German’s home. German was found stabbed to death outside his home, with seven wounds to his neck and torso. The murder shocked the local community, given the journalist’s role in holding public figures accountable.

During the trial, prosecutors emphasized Telles’s growing anger over German’s reporting, which had contributed to his loss in the 2022 primary election. Telles attempted to argue that he was framed, citing alleged police errors during the investigation, but the jury was unconvinced. After nearly 12 hours of deliberation, they returned a unanimous guilty verdict. Telles was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

The case has drawn significant attention to the dangers faced by journalists, particularly those involved in investigative work. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson emphasized that the verdict should serve as a clear message against attempts to silence the press.

Jeff German was a veteran journalist with a long history of exposing corruption and wrongdoing. His work had previously covered organized crime, political corruption, and the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. The Review-Journal has described German’s killing as a direct attack on the freedom of the press and has continued to honor his legacy through ongoing investigative work.

The conviction of Robert Telles marks a significant moment in the fight to protect journalists and hold public officials accountable for their actions.
