Former Arsenal and Ghanaian international footballer Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police confirmed.
The alleged offences reportedly took place between 2021 and 2022 and involve three women — with two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape connected to a second, and one count of sexual assault involving a third.
Partey, 32, denies the allegations and, according to his lawyer, “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
The charges follow a police investigation that began in February 2022 after an initial report of rape.
Partey, whose contract with Arsenal ended on Monday after joining the club in 2020, is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5.
In a statement, his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said:
“Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, urged anyone affected or with information to contact the investigation team at CIT@met.police.uk.
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 for £45.3 million and went on to make 130 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals. He also represented Ghana internationally more than 50 times and played in World Cup qualifiers as recently as March.
