Rescue teams are racing against time to locate dozens of people still missing after a ferry sank in rough seas late Wednesday while traveling to the Indonesian resort island of Bali, leaving at least six people dead.
Authorities say the vessel, which departed from Indonesia’s main island of Java, was carrying 65 passengers — all Indonesian nationals — when it went down in stormy conditions.
So far, 35 survivors have been rescued and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, according to the Indonesian rescue agency.
Search efforts, which include teams from the navy and police, have been hampered by strong winds, powerful currents, and waves reaching up to six-and-a-half feet high overnight.
The Indonesian Transport Ministry confirmed that the ferry encountered rough seas before sinking and that rescue operations are ongoing.
More updates to follow as the situation develops.
