MIAMI, Florida — At least five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway and crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday.
The aircraft, Prime Air Flight 7598, was a Boeing 767-300 operated by cargo carrier 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. It had departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was landing in Miami shortly before 2:00 p.m. when it ran beyond the end of the airport’s diagonal runway. (Reuters)
The plane then struck several vehicles on the ground before coming to rest in a nearby field and catching fire.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah described the scene as complex, with more than 60 emergency units responding to the crash. Firefighters battled heavy flames and smoke while rescue crews worked to free people trapped in vehicles and inside the aircraft. (CBS News)
Five people were injured, including three who were reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the five people killed were aboard the aircraft or on the ground. (KPBS Public Media)
The pilot and co-pilot were among those who had to be rescued from the aircraft following the crash.
The accident caused a major disruption at Miami International Airport, with flight operations temporarily halted as emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene. Further delays and cancellations were expected as authorities continued their work. (FreightWaves)
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. The cause has not yet been determined.
Authorities are also examining weather conditions around the time of the accident, although officials have not established whether weather played a role.
Amazon and 21 Air have expressed condolences to those affected and said they are cooperating with investigators.
