The Jamaica Fire Brigade is mourning the loss of one of its youngest members, 20-year-old firefighter Shahine Nelson, who died in a car accident on Friday.
Nelson, who had been with the brigade since December 2022, was driving home from her shift at the Stony Hill Fire Station when the fatal crash occurred.
According to reports, around 10 p.m., Nelson’s Honda Fit collided with the rear wheels of a tractor-trailer making a turn onto the Angels Toll Road in St. Catherine. The massive truck crushed Nelson’s vehicle, leaving her with fatal injuries. Despite the rapid response from her fellow firefighters, she could not be saved.
Nelson’s death is especially heartbreaking for her family, as her brother, Lorenzo Douse, also a firefighter, was killed in a traffic accident while on duty in November 2022. At the time of his passing, Nelson was still undergoing training to join the Fire Brigade, making her loss even more tragic.
Commissioner Stewart Beckford described Nelson as a promising young woman, adding that her death has shaken the brigade. This comes at a difficult time, as the department recently lost another firefighter in the United States.
