ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The dramatic search for the father of slain 13-year-old schoolgirl Shantina Sergeant has come to an end. Lawmen have confirmed that Lawrence Sergeant, who was named as a person of interest in his daughter’s gruesome murder, was nabbed by police in Old Harbour, St Catherine, on Friday afternoon.
Reports reaching McKoy’s News are that between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., officers from a special operations team tracked and captured Sergeant in the area after an intense manhunt that spanned several parishes.
His arrest comes just days after police issued a public appeal for him to turn himself in, following the discovery of Shantina’s charred remains on Monday. The teen’s body was found beneath a zinc sheet beside a burnt-out refrigerator behind the family’s home, shocking the quiet community and sparking national outrage.
The police say Sergeant is now in custody and is expected to be questioned in the presence of his attorney as investigations deepen into the horrifying killing that has left Jamaica in mourning.
