Family Demands Probe After Fatal Shooting of August Town Resident by Soldiers

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Relatives of a St Andrew man who was fatally shot during an encounter with members of the Jamaica Defence Force are urging authorities to carry out a swift and thorough investigation into the incident.

The deceased, 34-year-old Ricardo Gayle of August Town, was killed early Monday morning following a reported confrontation at a Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) checkpoint in the community.

According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after 3:00 a.m. when Gayle allegedly became involved in an altercation with soldiers. During the encounter, he was shot and later transported to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where he was pronounced dead.

Family members, who described Gayle as mentally unwell, expressed shock and anger at the circumstances of his death. One relative at the scene insisted he was not involved in criminal activity and called for justice, stating that the use of lethal force was unjustified.

Gayle’s mother, Melissa Bennett, was overcome with grief as she reacted to the tragedy. She confirmed that her son had struggled with mental illness and said she was struggling to come to terms with his death.

Bennett further alleged that Gayle sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to the chest and back.

Relatives also noted that Gayle was familiar to security personnel in the area and often assisted them with technical issues, particularly mobile phone repairs. They described him as intelligent and non-violent, adding that his death has left the family searching for answers.

Investigations into the incident are expected as concerns mount over the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
