A Gwinnett County Superior Court judge has awarded $52 million to the family of Doris Jordan, a Georgia nurse and Army veteran who died following liposuction and a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) at a cosmetic surgery clinic in December 2019.
Jordan, a mother of three, underwent the procedure at Sei Bello, a clinic in Lawrenceville. She reportedly lost consciousness during the operation and never recovered, passing away the following day.
In the malpractice ruling, the court awarded $16 million for pain and suffering and $36 million for wrongful death. However, the family may not receive the full amount, as the clinic did not carry malpractice insurance at the time of the incident.
Court testimony revealed that Jordan suffered brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. Her attorney, Moses Kim, stated that the clinic ran out of anesthesia during the surgery and later discovered that Jordan’s oxygen tubing was not connected to an active oxygen source.
Kim said staff realized Jordan was not breathing and, upon checking the nasal oxygen tubes, found the tubing disconnected because the facility had no oxygen supply. The court also heard that staff waited 19 minutes after discovering Jordan had no pulse before contacting emergency services.
Kim told the court that the failures were preventable and began even before the surgery started.
Jordan’s husband, James Jordan, said the financial award cannot replace his wife. He added that the family has not received compensation and continues to seek answers.
State records show Sei Bello was dissolved within a year of Jordan’s death. The doctor involved reached a separate settlement, while the clinic owner did not respond to requests for comment.
