A 33-year-old man from St Catherine was shot and killed on Monday after a confrontation with police officers who were attempting to arrest him.
The deceased has been identified by authorities as O’Shane Cunningham, a labourer residing on Jones Avenue in Spanish Town.
Police said the incident occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. in Twickenham Park Estate, St Catherine, where members of the Area Five Fugitive Apprehension Team were conducting surveillance on Cunningham.
According to the official report, officers approached Cunningham and attempted to search him. A physical struggle then ensued, during which Cunningham fell to the ground.
While on the ground, police allege Cunningham tried to draw a firearm from his waistband. Officers responded by firing shots, striking him.
A Taurus GR nine-millimetre pistol was reportedly recovered from Cunningham at the scene.
He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The case is currently under investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
