Energy Minister Daryl Vaz Calls for Investigation Into Major Spike in JPS Bills

Kingston, Jamaica: Energy Minister Daryl Vaz expressed deep concern Sunday evening over a significant and “unusual” spike in electricity bills reported by customers of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS). In a media release, Vaz confirmed his intention to formally request an investigation by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) into the matter, citing widespread dissatisfaction and a flood of complaints from citizens.

Vaz, who has been inundated with reports from Jamaicans across the island, has called for immediate action to address the issue. “I’ve been bombarded by complaints from Jamaicans from all walks of life. I will also be sending correspondence to JPS insisting on an investigation into this development and an explanation,” he stated.

The energy minister emphasized the need for JPS to provide a clear and thorough explanation for the spike in bills, insisting that the company treat its customers fairly. “The widespread reports of a major spike in bills presents an opportunity for us to once and for all deal with longstanding complaints about the JPS’ billing cycle,” Vaz added.

In addition to the general complaints, Vaz disclosed that he has received troubling reports of JPS customers who experienced extended power outages due to Hurricane Beryl yet have seen a substantial increase in their electricity bills. This development has only heightened concerns among affected residents and prompted calls for a swift and transparent investigation.
