Kingston, Jamaica — An elderly man charged with failing to deliver vehicles after collecting payments from two individuals had his bail extended when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Lester Stevens is facing two counts of fraudulent conversion and non-delivery of goods or services after allegedly accepting money but failing to hand over the promised vehicles by the agreed deadline.
Presiding Judge Peter Wilson did not mince words during the court proceedings, stating, “Promises were made that were not kept. When will they be kept?”
Stevens’ attorney informed the court that a deposit has been made, and that the vehicle in question is expected to arrive in Jamaica within 21 days. The defence team requested an additional three months to fulfil the agreement.
However, Judge Wilson referenced clause two of the contract, which clearly stated the vehicle was to be delivered by the end of March—a deadline that had already passed.
When asked by the judge if they were willing to give Stevens more time, both complainants agreed, prompting the judge to remark, “You’re drinking the Kool-Aid.”
Judge Wilson also noted that the delay has left both complainants without transportation, resulting in financial hardship.
To date, Stevens has repaid $400,000 and an additional $5,000 for transportation, but still owes $205,000. The court extended his bail to allow time for the vehicle importation and transfer to at least one of the complainants.
Stevens is scheduled to return to court on June 20, with Judge Wilson warning him to use the time wisely to honour his contractual obligations.
