ST ANDREW, Jamaica — Duane Smith of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has won the St Andrew North Western by-election by a wide margin, securing 94.4 per cent of the votes cast. Smith received 1,863 votes, defeating independent candidate Carl Marshall, who garnered 111 votes (5.6 per cent).
The by-election saw a preliminary voter turnout of just 6.2 per cent, according to the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ).
The seat became vacant following the resignation of former Member of Parliament Dr Nigel Clarke. The People’s National Party (PNP), the main opposition party, chose not to contest the election, leaving Smith to face Marshall, who entered the race after Rohan Banks withdrew.
Smith’s commanding victory reinforces the JLP’s stronghold in the constituency. However, the historically low turnout has sparked discussions about voter engagement in the area.
