TRELAWNY, Jamaica — Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has been re-elected as Member of Parliament for the Trelawny Southern constituency, defeating independent candidate Lloyd ‘Mozy’ Gillings in Friday’s by-election.
Dalrymple-Philibert secured 4,146 votes, representing 74.3 per cent of the ballots cast, while Gillings received 1,434 votes (25.7 per cent). The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) reported a preliminary voter turnout of 22.3 per cent.
The by-election was called following Dalrymple-Philibert’s resignation in 2023, which came amid mounting pressure related to eight charges brought against her by the Integrity Commission. Despite the controversy, Dalrymple-Philibert’s re-election signals continued support from JLP loyalists in the constituency.
The main opposition People’s National Party (PNP) did not field a candidate in the election, leaving the race to the JLP and the independent challenger.
Dalrymple-Philibert’s victory reaffirms her position as a key figure in the JLP’s parliamentary lineup as the party prepares for future electoral contests.
