KINGSTON, Jamaica — Rising Jamaican disc jockey Matthew Nelson, popularly known as DJ Kovert, died on Saturday, October 24, following complications from a motor vehicle crash in St Andrew, the Jamaica Observer reported. He was 19.
Nelson died at the University Hospital of the West Indies, two days after the crash on Washington Boulevard. The Observer reported that he was understood to have been driving home in the early hours of Thursday. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear.
A former Ardenne High School student, Nelson was pursuing a degree in management studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona. He began playing professionally in 2024 after winning the SunCity High School DJ Competition.
His involvement in entertainment extended to event promotion. Alongside business partner Dominic Bartley, he co-promoted FWD, a fortnightly party series at Dulce Lounge in Barbican.
In an August interview with the Observer, Nelson said organising school socials at Ardenne had helped him gain experience in planning and marketing. He described a passion for creating spaces where his generation could enjoy music and entertainment.
Tributes followed news of his death. DJ Russ Buss praised his musical ability and humility, while close friend DJ Zacky remembered his optimism and the strong friendship they developed through music. DJ JJ Deadlock recalled Nelson lending him a laptop when technical problems interrupted a performance.
