Jamaica’s National Security Council has recommended a minimum prison sentence of 20 years for illegal firearm possession.
The proposal would increase the existing mandatory minimum of 15 years under the Firearms Act. The higher penalty has not yet taken effect.
Proposed amendments would also criminalise adults’ recruitment of children to handle illegal guns and review provisions concerning minors, imitation weapons and expired licences.
A gun amnesty and cash buy-back programme would precede implementation. The Ministry of National Security and Peace has been instructed to prepare draft legislation for consultation by the end of November 2026.
