Dancehall Icon Vybz Kartel has applied for a US visa to attend the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 5th. His “Party With Me” EP is nominated for Best Reggae Album, marking a significant achievement in his career.
In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Kartel expressed his desire to attend the Grammys, stating that it would be beneficial for all nominees to be present. This nomination is particularly noteworthy given his 13 years of incarceration, which undoubtedly impacted his career trajectory.
Kartel acknowledged that his imprisonment likely hindered his earlier Grammy nominations. However, he expressed gratitude for this current recognition.
Prior to his incarceration, Kartel had performed extensively in the United States, including notable shows in Miami and New York. However, legal challenges and subsequent visa restrictions limited his ability to continue performing in the country.
Since his release from prison in July 2024, Kartel has been actively reviving his career. He has announced plans to headline the Wireless Festival in England later this year and perform at shows in Germany this summer.
Kartel attributed the recent growth in his UK streaming popularity to his fiancée being from the UK.
Anticipation is high for a potential collaboration with rapper Cardi B, who recently publicly supported Kartel’s return to the music scene. Kartel confirmed that they are currently working on a song together and expressed his intention to perform it in New York.
Vybz Kartel’s journey serves as a testament to his resilience and the enduring power of his music.
