St Catherine, Jamaica — Michael Uylett, a licensed firearm holder and former president of the Sydenham Citizens’ Association, was acquitted of gun-related charges on Wednesday in the Gun Court.
Uylett had been charged with using a firearm to commit an offence and assault occasioning bodily harm following an alleged altercation in Sydenham, Spanish Town, on November 23, 2023.
According to the allegations, Uylett and the complainant were involved in a dispute over garbage being burned in a field within the community. During the altercation, Uylett was accused of pulling his licensed firearm and using it to strike the complainant in the face.
However, attorneys Donahue Martin and Carole Phillips, representing Uylett, made a no-case submission, arguing that the complainant failed to provide a clear and adequate description of the weapon under the Firearms Act.
Justice Vaughn Smith agreed with the submission and handed down a formal verdict of not guilty, freeing Uylett of all charges.
