MANCHESTER, Jamaica— Police have arrested a man and a woman suspected of defrauding a hardware store in Mandeville as part of a larger multimillion-dollar scheme targeting local businesses.
The couple allegedly visited the store earlier this week after inquiring about materials over the phone and receiving banking details for a cheque deposit.
On Monday, they claimed to have deposited a cheque and collected materials, but upon checking their account before the couple returned for additional items on Friday, the store discovered the cheque was fraudulent.
Authorities are investigating the possibility that this couple is linked to a wider network of scammers affecting hardware stores throughout Manchester.
