The Cornwall College community is mourning the loss of one of their promising football stars, Dane Buckley, who succumbed to gunshot injuries at the hospital on Thursday. Buckley was shot and injured at a shop in the Norwood community in St. James on Wednesday, May 1.
Buckley, 18, was also of Hendon, Norwood, and a star player on the Cornwall College DaCosta Cup Squad.
Another victim, 49-year-old Andrew McDonald, also known as ‘Bobby,’ a tiler from Hendon in Norwood, was shot and killed during the incident.
According to police reports, shortly after 10:00 p.m., Buckley and McDowell were among patrons at a shop along Blood Lane in Hendon, Norwood, when a man approached the area and opened fire, hitting them and three other individuals.
The gunman then fled on foot. The police were summoned to the scene and discovered Buckley and McDowell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, along with a 29-year-old woman shot in her left foot, a 20-year-old man shot in his chest, and another man who was grazed.
All five wounded victims were rushed to the hospital. McDowell was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the other four victims were treated. One was released, and three, including Buckley, were admitted in serious condition.
Buckley underwent surgery but succumbed to his gunshot injuries on Thursday morning.
