Convicted Mass Murderer Defies Lawyer’s Advice, Pushes Forward with Appeal

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Rushane Barnett, the man convicted of one of the most gruesome family massacres in Jamaica’s recent history, is refusing to abandon his appeal, even as his own attorney advises against it. Barnett, who was sentenced to five life terms for the 2022 murders of his cousin, Kimesha Wright, and her four children, remains adamant that his punishment is too harsh.

Despite being eligible for parole after serving 61 years and eight months, Barnett believes the sentence handed down by Supreme Court Judge Leighton Pusey was “excessive” and is seeking a reduction. His court-appointed attorney, Kemar Robinson, informed him there were no legal grounds to challenge the ruling, but Barnett remains undeterred. When the case was brought before the Court of Appeal on Friday, Robinson revealed that Barnett rejected his position and intends to seek new legal representation.

The chilling details of the crime left the nation reeling. Wright and her children—Kimanda, 15; Sharalee, 12; Rafaella, 5; and 23-month-old Kishawn—were found slaughtered in their Cocoa Piece home with chop wounds and their throats slashed on June 21, 2022. Barnett confessed that his cousin’s “disrespect” during a minor altercation days earlier triggered the killings. According to him, the conflict began when Wright berated him for serving one of her shop’s customers, grabbing money from his hand and splashing water in his face.

Despite the horrifying nature of the crime, Barnett is pressing ahead, seeking what he believes is justice—a lighter sentence. His decision to disregard legal advice and push forward with an appeal has raised eyebrows, leaving many to wonder if the court will entertain his plea for a second chance.

The Court of Appeal will next determine whether Barnett will be allowed to proceed with new counsel as the case unfolds.
