A major crackdown on counterfeit goods in downtown Kingston has resulted in the arrest and charging of a store supervisor after authorities seized thousands of fake shoes.
The accused, 51-year-old Hou Qin, a Chinese national, faces charges of unauthorised use of a trademark and engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct.
According to police reports, the operation was carried out on Wednesday, April 1, when a team from the Transnational Crime Investigation Division (TCID), under the Specialized Investigation Branch (SIB), conducted a search at a haberdashery on Barry Street at about 11:30 a.m.
During the exercise, more than 1,900 pairs of shoes believed to be counterfeit were reportedly confiscated. Investigators estimate the street value of the items at approximately $6.3 million.
Head of the TCID, Detective Inspector Troy Daure, reiterated the division’s commitment to pursuing individuals who violate intellectual property and trademark laws.
He also encouraged members of the public to purchase goods only from legitimate and authorised retailers, noting that counterfeit products are often manufactured without proper safety and quality standards.
Qin is scheduled to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Monday, April 20.
