ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Businesswoman Shena Pryce and fisherman Kemar Bent were acquitted in the High Court Division of the Gun Court on Tuesday after the prosecution offered no evidence against them.
The two Old Harbour residents were among four people arrested following the alleged discovery of three loaded illegal pistols in a vehicle in January 2024.
They had been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition and being part of a criminal organisation.
The matter came before Judge Natalie Hart Hinds, with attorneys Donahue Martin and Carole Phillips making submissions on behalf of their clients. Following a review of the case, the prosecution offered no evidence, resulting in the acquittals.
Police had alleged that about 1:00 a.m. on January 21, 2024, officers acting on information intercepted a Toyota Probox along a roadway in Old Harbour Bay. They reported finding three loaded nine-millimetre pistols inside the vehicle.
Pryce, Bent and two minors were arrested and subsequently charged. The case was initially brought before the St Catherine Parish Court before being transferred to the Gun Court.
Pryce had been granted $100,000 bail, while Bent received $150,000 bail.
The two minors are scheduled to return to the Gun Court on Tuesday.
