The trial of murder accused Andre Ruddock is set to begin in the Supreme Court on Thursday, nearly five years after the fatal incident at a church in St James.
A seven-member jury was empanelled on Wednesday, clearing the way for the trial before Justice Leighton Pusey.
Ruddock is accused of killing fellow church member Taneka Gardner during a ritual at Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries on October 17, 2021.
According to eyewitness accounts, Ruddock allegedly used a knife to slash Gardner’s throat during the ritual, which was presided over by controversial pastor Kevin Smith.
Both Ruddock and Smith were arrested following the incident.
Smith died on October 25, 2021, after the vehicle transporting him to Kingston to face charges was involved in a crash on the Linstead bypass in St Catherine.
Ruddock allegedly confessed to Gardner’s murder in a caution statement given to police.
He is represented by attorneys Anthony Williams and Venice Brown, while attorneys Latoya Bernard and Carolyn Wright are appearing for the Crown.
The prosecution is expected to begin presenting its case when the trial gets underway on Thursday.
