KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) is proposing the introduction of a national screen time policy amid growing concerns about the impact of excessive use of tablets and other electronic devices on children.
JTA President La Sonja Harrison said increased screen use has contributed to a decline in face-to-face conversations and physical play among children, while also affecting their motor skills.
Harrison is urging a renewed focus on books and traditional learning activities, particularly among younger children, while acknowledging that technology continues to have an important role in education.
She said the goal should be to strike an appropriate balance between technology-based learning and activities that support children’s social, physical and developmental needs.
Harrison made the comments during a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Mandeville.
