MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Panic gripped students and parents on Wednesday morning after a bus carrying 29 pupils from the Spalding-based Knox College veered off the Content to Williamsfield main road, narrowly avoiding tragedy.
The incident occurred sometime before 8:00 a.m., police said.
According to Sergeant Florizel Williams, head of the Manchester Traffic Department, the Toyota Coaster bus driver reported that he swerved sharply to the left in order to avoid slamming into the back of a vehicle that had stopped suddenly.
“This was a single-vehicle accident. It involved a Toyota Coaster bus with 29 students on board. The driver applied brakes, lost control, and ran off the roadway. Minor injuries were sustained, and most of the students have since gone on to school,” Sergeant Williams explained.
He added that while many of the children escaped serious harm, some were left traumatised, and parents chose to take them home.
The senior cop is now urging motorists to consider the use of dash cameras, arguing that they can play a vital role in traffic investigations.
“I would recommend that each motorist get a dash cam, because that will clear up the ambiguity in most of these collisions. It’s not only for themselves, but it provides clarity in terms of the investigation,” Williams stressed.
He went further to suggest that insurance companies should make dash cameras mandatory, noting that in collisions, “everybody will try to defend themselves, but not everybody is right.”
Despite the scare, Knox College officials and parents are counting their blessings, relieved that a morning commute that could have turned deadly ended with only minor injuries.
