A motor vehicle collision along the AGR Byfield main road in St Ann on Saturday afternoon has claimed the life of a 19-year-old driver.
Reports from the police indicate that the crash occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. near a gas station. The incident involved a white 2012 Toyota Crown motor car, which the teenager was operating at the time.
Preliminary findings from the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch suggest that excessive speed, possible misjudgment, and a loss of control may have contributed to the fatal crash.
Despite the tragedy, authorities note a significant reduction in road fatalities so far this year. Data from the branch reveal that between January 1 and 6:00 a.m. on March 29, a total of 55 individuals lost their lives in 48 fatal collisions.
This marks a 37 percent decrease in deaths and a 41 percent drop in fatal crashes when compared to the corresponding period in 2025, which recorded 87 fatalities from 81 incidents. The figures also show improvement over 2024, when 106 people died in 93 crashes during the same timeframe.
For the month of March alone, there have been 10 deaths resulting from nine collisions. This reflects a 64 percent reduction in fatalities and a 67 percent decrease in crashes compared to March 2025.
Investigations into Saturday’s crash remain ongoing.
