A tragic fire has claimed the life of a 14-year-old girl and left her elder brother in critical condition in St John’s Garden, Spanish Town, on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Gabriella Wright.
According to the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the blaze destroyed the family’s five-bedroom home, leaving it completely gutted. Firefighters were alerted to the emergency at approximately 4:40 p.m. and responded quickly, but the structure was already fully engulfed upon their arrival.
Divisional Commander for St Catherine, Superintendent Dennis Lyons, reported that one individual had already been removed from the scene and taken to hospital before fire units arrived.
The injured teen, identified as Gabriella’s older brother, reportedly sustained burns to approximately 80 percent of his body and remains hospitalised in serious condition.
After bringing the fire under control, firefighters carried out cooling-down operations. During that process, the charred remains of the young girl were discovered in a rear bedroom of the house.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
The incident has left residents of St John’s Garden in mourning as the community comes to terms with the loss and the severity of the brother’s injuries.
