South Shore, Chicago — A 12-year-old girl, identified as Priscilla McCullough, has died after accidentally shooting herself in the abdomen at an apartment in the South Shore neighborhood Sunday evening.
Authorities received a chilling 911 call at 6:52 p.m. from an apartment in the 7100 block of South Constance Avenue, where the young girl suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police confirmed that it was the victim’s mother who discovered the child and called for help.
Priscilla was rushed to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Initial investigations suggest that the firearm was retrieved from a lockbox inside the home. The gun was recovered at the scene, but it remains unclear how the child gained access to it. Police noted that other children were present at the time of the incident, according to dispatch audio.
As of late Sunday, no one was in custody, and detectives from the Wentworth Area are conducting an active investigation.
This tragic accident highlights ongoing concerns about firearm safety and secure storage. Authorities are urging gun owners to ensure that weapons are stored securely and out of reach of children.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
