$100 Million Approved for Rehabilitation of Anchovy–Shettlewood Road Corridor

The Government has earmarked J$100 million for major road repairs along the corridor connecting Anchovy in St James to Shettlewood in Hanover under the GO Road Rehabilitation Programme.

According to the National Works Agency (NWA), priority attention will be given to deteriorated sections between Mount Carey and Montpelier. The agency said the project is part of a broader islandwide push to address roads most affected by potholes, edge breaks and surface failures, particularly those posing safety concerns to road users.

The NWA noted that the works are designed to improve driving conditions for residents, public transport operators and businesses that rely on the route for daily movement and commerce.

Minister with responsibility for works in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Infrastructure, Robert Morgan, explained that rehabilitation activities will commence in the third week of January, once pipe-laying works in Montpelier are completed. That infrastructure project forms part of the Shettlewood to Anchovy Pipeline being executed by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).

Morgan said coordination between the NWA and JSIF is critical to prevent duplication and ensure damaged sections affected by excavation are restored to an acceptable standard. He described the investment as a practical and targeted intervention aimed at delivering lasting improvements.

The minister emphasised that the corridor is a vital transportation link for western Jamaica, supporting travel and trade between Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland and Montego Bay in St James. He added that the rehabilitation was planned last year and is now being rolled out as part of the wider GO Road Programme.

The $1.6-billion GO Road Rehabilitation Programme, which began in Kingston and St Andrew in December, is now expanding across the island to address roadways in urgent need of repair.

Meanwhile, the NWA is advising motorists to expect periodic traffic disruptions during the works and is urging the public to follow road signs and instructions from flag personnel. Further updates will be provided as implementation progresses.
