ZAMBIA — What started as a simple Sunday selfie for Zambian lawyer Pilula Naomie quickly turned into a viral storm, with the photo racking up over 700,000 shares and comments across social media — most of them harsh, critical, and laced with cruel remarks about her appearance.
Some even questioned whether the image was AI-generated, while others hurled insults rooted in narrow and toxic beauty standards. Observers note that the backlash highlights how brutal the internet can be — especially for women, and particularly Black women, who are often targeted when they don’t fit society’s rigid expectations.
But what makes Pilula’s story remarkable isn’t the negativity. It’s her resilience. Instead of deleting the post or retreating from the spotlight, the young attorney stood firm in her truth.
Her response was simple but powerful: “I know who I am, and that’s enough.”
Her courage has since drawn admiration worldwide, with many now praising her for refusing to bow to online bullying and for setting an example of strength and self-acceptance in the face of hate
