A Trelawny woman has been awarded over $100 million in damages after becoming paralyzed following a spinal decompression surgery at Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay.
Nicole Ann Fuller Clarke underwent the surgery in October 2015 and has been unable to walk since. Supreme Court Justice Maxine Jackson ordered the Western Regional Health Authority and the Attorney General to pay the substantial sum.
The compensation includes $70 million for pain and suffering, $8.6 million for future home care, $5.2 million for lost income, and additional millions for future medical expenses, daily living costs, and other related expenses. Clarke will also receive special damages for lost income, additional help, medical expenses, and transportation.
Prior to the surgery, Clarke experienced tingling in her fingers and numbness and swelling in her right leg. Diagnosed with cervical myelopathy, she was referred for surgery, which tragically resulted in complete paralysis.
