WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Taxi operators and residents mounted roadblocks in sections of Westmoreland on Monday, protesting poor road conditions and concerns surrounding the new demerit point system.
The protest began shortly after 6 a.m., according to a resident, with roadblocks reported in Shrewsbury, Bullet Tree and Harford.
The resident said protesters were also concerned about the enforcement of traffic rules, claiming that some motorists were being issued tickets without adequate explanations.
Meanwhile, implementation of the new demerit point system, originally scheduled for October 1, 2026, has been delayed following discussions between the Public Transport Operators Steering Committee and other transport stakeholders.
The system is expected to undergo a full revision, including recommendations from the committee and an education programme.
Under the proposed system, drivers start with zero demerit points, which are added to their traffic records for specified offences. A driver’s licence can be suspended once the prescribed point threshold is reached.
