Westmoreland Caregiver Hid Woman’s Body for Nearly Two Years, Claiming She “Wasn’t Saved”

Westmoreland, Jamaica — In a shocking case that has left residents of Old Hope district, Little London stunned, police discovered the mummified remains of an elderly woman inside a house — nearly two years after her death.

According to investigators, the deceased, identified as Viola Destin, is believed to have died on December 10, 2023. Instead of reporting the death, her live-in caregiver, 54-year-old Gena Robinson, allegedly kept the body hidden in a bedroom, claiming she was following a divine vision.

On Sunday, relatives who grew suspicious of Robinson’s behavior visited the house and made the grim discovery: Destin’s body lying on a mattress, still wrapped in a sheet and partially covered with a tarpaulin.

One source familiar with the case explained that Robinson told others she kept the body because Destin “wasn’t saved” and she didn’t want her to “go to hell.” Robinson reportedly claimed she had received a vision from God instructing her not to bury or report the death until the woman was spiritually ready.

Destin reportedly had no close family in Jamaica and had been under Robinson’s care for some time, after meeting through a church connection.

Even after such a long period, parts of the body reportedly remained intact, leading to speculation about how it was preserved. “The skin was still on the bones when it was found,” the source said, suggesting Robinson might have used some kind of embalming fluid or other method to delay decomposition.

Police processed the scene and removed the body to the morgue, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Robinson has since been charged with:

  • Failing to report the death of a person
  • Preventing the lawful burial of a corpse
  • Attempting to pervert the course of justice

When contacted, Superintendent Othniel Dobson, commanding officer for the Westmoreland Police Division, confirmed that discussions on the matter are ongoing and more details will be shared as the investigation progresses.

Asked whether anything similar had ever occurred in the area, Dobson said:

“Not to my knowledge.”

The case remains under investigation.
