Kingston, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – Tension high, bullets fly!
Member of Parliament for Central Kingston, Donovan Williams, is calling for calm and urging Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters to show restraint following a frightening gun attack on Tuesday night.
Reports are that Williams and a group of JLP campaigners came under fire at the busy intersection of Tower Street and South Camp Road — right in the heart of the volatile Southside community.
Eyewitnesses say gunmen rolled up in a vehicle and suddenly opened fire in the direction of the MP and his team. Quick-thinking supporters and members of the campaign crew scattered and took cover as the gunshots rang out. Thankfully, no one was injured in the attack, but the would-be assassins made good their escape, speeding off into the night.
In a statement following the incident, a defiant MP Williams had this to say:
“We will not be intimidated. However, I want to appeal to our supporters to be calm and to exercise restraint. The Police are aware of the development and are actively investigating.”
The shooting comes just days after increased political activity in the constituency, as Williams ramps up his campaign in a bid for re-election. He famously wrestled the seat from the long-dominant People’s National Party in 2020 and has since been working to retain his hold on the traditionally tense stronghold.
Central Kingston, no stranger to political violence, has long been a hotspot — with memories of the Green Bay and Gold Street massacres still fresh in the minds of older residents. Though recent years have seen more peaceful political engagement, Tuesday night’s incident has sparked fears of a dangerous throwback to darker days.
Police have launched a full investigation into the shooting.
