Kingston, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) — Chaos erupted in the heart of Central Kingston Tuesday evening after gunmen opened fire on a group that included Member of Parliament Donovan Williams, while they were erecting campaign signs in the gritty Southside area.
The brazen attack happened at the corner of Lower South Camp Road and Tower Street — a volatile section of Parade Gardens known for its rough reputation. Though no one was injured, bullets struck a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) campaign vehicle, sending shockwaves through the political community.
Eyewitnesses say Williams, along with his bodyguard and members of his team, was actively engaging with constituents and putting up signs when a vehicle pulled up along Tower Street. Two men reportedly exited the vehicle and started approaching the group. Sensing danger, a vigilant supporter raised an alarm.
In a flash, members of the crowd scattered. That sudden movement seemed to trigger the gunmen, who reportedly opened fire while retreating to their waiting getaway vehicle. The men escaped the scene before police arrived.
Williams, who flipped the traditionally PNP stronghold in the 2020 general election, is gunning for a second term. But Tuesday’s attack is a chilling reminder of Central Kingston’s blood-soaked political past — an area still haunted by the memories of the Green Bay and Gold Street massacres.
In recent years, political campaigning in the area had become more peaceful, with both major parties operating in the same space with little friction. This latest incident, however, has stirred old fears.
Police are investigating, and MP Williams has yet to release a full statement.
