Montego Bay, St James: The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting of a man along a section of Railway Lane in Montego Bay, St James, on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Tyrese Sterling, also of a Montego Bay address. He was wanted in connection with a series of armed robberies committed in the second city in recent weeks.
Reports are that about 4:00 p.m., a team of police officers acted on information received and went to a section of Railway Lane in search of Sterling.
Upon reaching the intersection of Catherine Lane and Railway Lane, Sterling was seen standing along the roadway.
It is further reported that, upon seeing the police approaching, he brandished a handgun and pointed it at them, prompting the officers to open fire, hitting him.
A Glock semi-automatic pistol, fitted with a magazine containing four live 9mm rounds, was recovered from Sterling. He was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The police say the now-deceased was positively identified as one of several men involved in a recent string of armed robberies at Chinese-operated supermarkets in Montego Bay.
