Jamaica is mourning the loss of respected businessman and economist Dhiru Tanna, who passed away on Tuesday after a period of illness. His death was confirmed by Earl Jarrett, chief executive officer of Jamaica National Group, who described Tanna’s passing as a significant loss to the country’s private sector.
Tanna, a long-standing director within the Jamaica National Group, served the institution for approximately 45 years, contributing to its strategic growth and stability. Jarrett noted that although Tanna had been ailing, his death came as a shock to many who knew him as a resilient and deeply committed leader.
A towering figure in Jamaican business, Tanna was chairman of Blue Power Group, one of the island’s well-known manufacturing firms. He was also instrumental in the development of several enterprises, including Lumber Depot, helping to shape Jamaica’s commercial landscape over decades.
Born in Uganda, Tanna later made Jamaica his home, where he built an influential career grounded in academic excellence and business acumen. Holding a PhD in economics, he was widely regarded for his analytical approach to decision-making and his ability to navigate complex economic challenges.
Throughout his career, Tanna held senior executive roles, including leadership within the Jamaican operations of Neal & Massy, and played a key part in major corporate transactions that impacted the regional business environment.
Colleagues and associates remember him not only for his professional achievements but also for his mentorship and quiet leadership style. He was known as a thoughtful, data-driven strategist who commanded respect across business, academic, and policy circles.
