Kingston, Jamaica – Matthew Hyde, the 21-year-old University of the West Indies student who held his ex-girlfriend captive and subjected her to horrific abuse, was today sentenced to 13 years and 9 months’ imprisonment.
Hyde pleaded guilty in September to several charges, including assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, use of malicious communication, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and false imprisonment.
The incident occurred in February of this year when Hyde held his ex-girlfriend captive in his dorm room at George Alleyne Hall for three days. During this time, he subjected her to severe physical and emotional abuse, including burns from a hot iron and other forms of assault.
Hyde has been in custody since his arrest last February.
