US Government to Expand Passport Revocations for Parents With Major Child Support Arrears

Washington, D.C. — The United States government is preparing to widen enforcement measures that allow authorities to revoke passports from parents who owe significant child support, according to information reported by The Associated Press citing government sources.

Officials say the move will strengthen application of an existing federal law that permits passport denial or revocation for individuals with more than US$2,500 in unpaid child support. While the law has been in place for years, enforcement has largely occurred when affected individuals applied for passport renewals or related services.

Under the updated approach, revocations are expected to be carried out more proactively through coordination between the State Department and the Department of Health and Human Services. Authorities will use arrears data to identify qualifying cases rather than waiting for passport-related applications to trigger action.

Sources indicate that initial enforcement will focus on cases involving very high unpaid balances — reportedly those exceeding US$100,000 — with a relatively small number of passport holders expected to be affected in the first phase. Impacted individuals may be given the opportunity to enter formal repayment arrangements to avoid losing passport privileges.

The State Department, in a statement responding to media queries, said it is reviewing enforcement options under the long-standing statute aimed at ensuring parents meet their legal financial obligations to their children.

Federal officials note that the passport denial and restriction program has already contributed to the collection of hundreds of millions of dollars in overdue child support since its introduction, with several individual cases resulting in large recoveries.

No formal nationwide rollout date has been announced, but officials say additional enforcement details are expected to be outlined in upcoming policy guidance.
