St. James, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – A wave of grief has swept through West Village and the wider St. James community after it was confirmed that the 5-year-old boy who was shot in the head during Saturday night’s attack in Reading has succumbed to his injuries.
The incident, which has left the nation in shock, now claims two lives — that of the child and his mother, Latoya Crystal Stephenson, 36, an HR Manager.
Stephenson was killed on the spot when gunmen ambushed the family near Elevate Nightclub, opening fire on the vehicle they were in. Her common-law partner, Constable Morgan of the Area 1 Lottery Scam Task Force, was also shot in the back and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The horrifying attack unfolded around 8:25 p.m. on Saturday night, when the family went to meet a man known only as “Romario” to collect a motor vehicle key.
Reports are that “Romario” arrived at the location in a second vehicle and parked behind the family’s car. Stephenson exited to retrieve the key, but as she returned, occupants of “Romario’s” vehicle opened fire on the family — spraying bullets that left the mother and child fatally wounded and the officer fighting for his life.
The 5-year-old was rushed to hospital by residents and underwent emergency surgery. Despite best efforts by medical teams, he died late last night, plunging an already grieving family deeper into heartbreak.
The family’s vehicle, riddled with bullet holes, was processed by investigators. Fourteen 9mm spent casings, a bullet fragment, and blood samples were collected from the scene.
The police are now intensifying their search for “Romario”, who is being treated as a suspect in what authorities are calling a targeted and brutal attack.
The killing of an innocent child has sparked outrage across social media and within the community, as residents call for justice and an end to the escalating violence in the parish.
McKoy’s News will continue to provide updates on this developing and deeply tragic story.
