A 19-year-old British man, Marcus Fakana, has been released from a UAE prison after serving six months of a one-year sentence for having sex with a 17-year-old girl. Fakana, who was 18 at the time of the incident, was pardoned by the ruler of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Fakana was sentenced in December 2024 following what was described as a “consensual relationship” with a British girl while he was on holiday with his parents in the UAE. The age of consent in the UAE is 18.
Reports indicate that the girl’s mother alerted UAE authorities after discovering text messages between the teenagers upon her return to the UK. Fakana has since returned to his home in Tottenham, north London
