Digicel Shuts Down Loop News and Announces SportsMax Closure

Telecommunications giant Digicel has announced the immediate closure of its Caribbean-wide news platform, Loop News, and revealed plans to wind down regional sports broadcaster SportsMax by August 8, 2025.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Digicel described the move as part of a strategic pivot away from consumer-facing media and toward scalable, enterprise-grade services offered through Digicel Business.

“This is a strategic repositioning to ensure Digicel is best placed to deliver secure, scalable services for the future,” said Liam Donnelly, Group Chief Business Officer.

“While we are proud of the legacy of SportsMax and Loop News, we are now focused on where we can create the greatest value for our customers and the communities we serve.”

Digicel said that affected employees have already been informed of the decision and that transition support will be provided in accordance with local labour laws.

SportsMax, which launched in 2002, became well-known for showcasing premier local, regional, and international sports content, and played a major role in launching the careers of numerous on-air and behind-the-scenes talents.

Loop News, founded in 2014, quickly emerged as a trusted news source across the Caribbean, winning multiple awards and cultivating an engaged community of readers and viewers.

Looking ahead, Digicel says it will now focus on expanding its Trend Media brand and integrating its recently-acquired Symptai, offering a broader suite of ICT services including cloud, cybersecurity, digital advertising, and compliance solutions.

These services, the company noted, will leverage strategic partnerships and respond to the growing demand for managed end-to-end solutions across the region.
