Spanish Town, St. Catherine – A late-night operation in Rivoli, Spanish Town, ended in tragedy on Friday as two men were fatally shot during a confrontation with the police.
The deceased have been identified as Marco Miller, also known as “Izzy,” and Alex Phillipot, alias “Toby,” both residents of Buck Town in Rivoli.
According to reports, around 9:00 p.m., police officers, on patrol in the area, became suspicious of the men’s behavior. The police reportedly called out to the men, who responded by firing shots and fleeing towards the river near Ferdyne Close.
The police pursued the men, and upon reaching the river, the team was reportedly attacked by one of the suspects armed with a rifle. Despite the officers shouting “police,” the man allegedly opened fire, prompting a shootout in which he was hit. The officers seized a Smith & Wesson pistol with a magazine containing two 9mm rounds, along with a shotgun.
During the continued operation, police observed an open door at a nearby house. Upon entry, they reportedly encountered another man armed with a firearm, which he allegedly pointed at the officers. The police fired, hitting the man and seizing the weapon.
The police’s Inspectorate of Professional Standards Oversight Bureau and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) have launched separate probes into the fatal shooting to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities are urging residents to cooperate with investigators as they work to establish the facts of the case.
